Discovering Healthy Foods
March Artist Spotlight Project at the Bay Area Discovery Museum
For my artist spotlight project, I had the pleasure of working with students at the Discovery School located onsite at the Bay Area Discovery Museum. I partnered with the Hummingbird 3 year-olds class and their awesome teacher Elisa Pagliarulo to do a mini-lesson on nutrition. After a reading of the book, "Eat Healthy, Feel Great" by William Sears, Martha Sears, and Christie Watts Kelly, students brainstormed a list of fruits and veggies they wanted their teacher to bring in the following week.
I arrived in class the following Monday and led a small group of children in an art lesson. Students created contour drawings of the whole foods brought in by their teacher and finished them by adding color using liquid watercolor.
A week later, I returned to the Discovery School to collect student drawings and check out the drawing show-and-tell. Students shared their drawings with their classmates and answered questions about their work.
After reviewing all the student drawings, I chose a selection of eight different fruits and veggies which I traced over in Adobe Illustrator. I then created a repeat pattern from these designs and screen-printed it onto a large cotton banner. I finished my work by hand-painting each print with fiber reactive dye.
On Saturday, March 24th, I presented two public workshops: "Banner Making with Keeley McSherry" at the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Participants worked with myself and BADM staff to create their own screen-printed and hand-painted mini-banners! It was an awesome culmination to a wonderful project. I truly enjoyed the opportunity to connect with kids and adults alike and extend the process of the project.
Special Thanks to the BADM staff Christina Sheils and Marie Himmelstein as well as the Discovery School Hummingbird 3s and Elisa Pagliarulo!
